Thyroid surgery
The thyroid
gland is an important gland in the body where it plays a role in the metabolism and vital processes of the body, affecting the functioning of the heart and the body as a whole and located at the bottom of the neck. We may often have to remove them for different reasons, possibly due to hyperactivity or disorders in their functioning as cancer and may be caused by a non-cancerous cause such as thyroid after proper surgery, whether by removing them completely or partially.
To elaborate more on the reasons that may lead us to eradicate them:
Hyperdyroidism may be the most common cause of removal where the thyroid gland produces a large amount of the hormone thyroxin, especially if the patient is not suitable for radioode treatment and we also have to remove in the event of non-qualitative nodules suspected of cancer after taking a sample of them for study.
Among the cases, the gland swells to the point where it is difficult to swallow and breathe or affect the levels of the hormone excessively so that the best solution is to eradicate it
And the last reasons and the most dangerous of which is to be carcinogenic so we remove it partially or completely depending on the patient’s condition
As for each surgical procedure, dependencies include mixing that may cause sepa, bleeding, infection or obstruction of the respiratory tract and it is possible to lower hormone levels, so we use potassium iodine solution to reduce bleeding after surgery.
The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, the patient breathes through the mask and we monitor the patient’s vitality from his pressure and heart attacks.
The operation does not take much time, it may be completed within a maximum of two hours in several ways to be aware of the condition of the patient, what we do through the mouth or an incision in the center of the neck or endoscopy with the help of a small video camera for guidance
At the end of the operation we make sure that there is a discharge device to avoid blockage and the patient will be able to eat and drink and practice the usual daily activities after the operation.
The use of sunscreen to reduce the incidence of scar when part of the gland removes the remaining parts will work normally and when completely removed we will give the patient levotrexin to compensate for the absence of the thyroid hormone in the body.
