Laparoscopic gynecological surgery

Laparoscopic gynecological surgery

Traditional surgery by opening the abdomen has always been the norm among gynecological surgeons since ancient times, but with the rapid developments that occurred in the medical field in the twenty-first century, it became possible to perform many gynecological operations through endoscopy.

What is laparoscopic gynecological surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery, or as the surgeons call it, “one-day surgery” is a surgery that is carried out by entering the patient’s abdomen by opening a very small hole with a diameter of not more than 1 cm in the navel and then inserting an endoscope equipped with a camera that displays all parts of the abdomen on a large screen.

Another opening or two openings are opened through which endoscopic surgical instruments are inserted.

What is the difference between laparoscopic surgery and conventional surgery?

  • The length of stay in the hospital in the traditional surgery extends for several days or more. In laparoscopic surgery, the patient is discharged on the same day or the next day.
  • The amount of pain in traditional surgery is more than in laparoscopic surgery, which often does not need pain relievers.
  • The recovery period in conventional surgery is several weeks, while in laparoscopic surgery, it does not exceed three days.
  • Traditional surgery leaves a large and wide scar on the patient’s abdomen, but with laparoscopic surgery, there is no scar, so from an aesthetic point of view it is better.
  • The cost of laparoscopic surgery is lower because the length of stay in the hospital is less and the number of medications is less.

What are the gynecological operations that can be performed by laparoscopy?

Most of the gynecological operations nowadays are performed through endoscopy, and we mention the most important of them:

  • The operation to remove an ectopic pregnancy.
  • Urinary incontinence operations.
  • Operations to remove adhesions inside the uterus and release pregnancy tubes in case of infertility.
  • Uterine prolapse.
  • Complete hysterectomy.
  • Ovarian cyst excision.
  • Endometriosis surgery.
  • The process of detecting the causes of infertility in women.
  • Diagnostic operations to investigate the cause of the patient’s chronic abdominal pain.

And there are also many gynecological operations, as laparoscopic surgery has already created a modern revolution in the field of gynecological surgery to cover most of the indications for surgical work in the specialty of women.
