gastric balloon operation
Stomach balloon
is a endoscopic procedure, not a surgery ranging from 15 to 20 minutes.
How to perform the operation first before the doctor puts the balloon in an upper endoscopy, through which the stomach, esophagus and duoble are examined to make sure there is no problem preventing the balloon from being installed such as ulcer or hernia in the esophagus.
The balloon, made of oral endoscopic silicone, is inserted into the stomach with local anesthesia of the patient, and then inflated with a quantity of water so that the balloon takes up space of the size of the stomach to make the patient feel full.
It takes 3 to 4 minutes to inflate the balloon inside the stomach and the amount of liquid injected into the balloon ranges from 500 to 700 ml, which controls the shape of the patient’s stomach.
The duration of the balloon’s stay in the stomach ranges from six months to the year, after which the balloon is also removed by endoscopy.
A colored substance, metilene blue, a colored liquid injected with saline liquid, is placed inside the balloon and its task is to detect any problem with the balloon such as infusion, in which case the substance will be released with urine and its color will change to blue or amber.
Place the balloon:
The balloon occupies the upper part of the stomach (heart area), where the nerve endings that send alerts to the brain are present with a sense of hunger and satiety, a secondary function of the balloon so that it intermittently presses the heart area and gives a sense of fullness and unwillingness to eat. After the operation, the patient stays in the recovery room or wakes from half an hour to an hour during which he is given intravenous fluids and then can leave the hospital for home.
Side effects are very limited.
Types of stomach balloon used in obesity treatment:
The first type of water stomach balloon and this balloon is often produced in the United States of America and Russia and its advantages are that weight loss is inevitable because the solution of salt in it weighs about 600 to 700 g, but its drawbacks are the possibility that the stomach does not accept the balloon as a foreign body and the rate of rejection of the stomach ranges from 6 to 8%.
The second type, the air stomach balloon, has been modified in France, which is the same idea as a water balloon, but is filled with air instead of saline solution, weighing about 30 g, which makes the stomach accept it more because of its light weight and the rate of rejection of the stomach is 1%.
The third type is a half-water and half-air balloon, which is also made in France and is clearly combining the pros of both previous types, which are so light that the patient’s stomach does not reject them and the benefits of the water balloon are heavy and weight loss.
One of the pros of the stomach balloon is that it can be reversed if the patient feels disturbed by it or wants to put it for a specified period and then wants to rely on himself to adjust his diet for the rest of his life in which case it can be removed without any complications and immediately return to normal.
For whom can the stomach balloon be applied and for whom cannot be applied?
In addition to the fact that balloon technology can be applied to reduce the risk of surgery in patients who will undergo bariatric surgery, it can also be applied to patients with a BMI of more than 25 who cannot get rid of excess weight despite their diet and exercise programs.
Stomach balloon cannot be used for people with stomach diseases, pregnant women, and people who have been treated with cortisone for a long time.
Does the stomach balloon explode?
Balloons do not explode inside the stomach, but may leak, although rare. The reason for coloring the liquid that inflates the balloons with a blue dye is to make sure that any leakage is noticeable. If balloons swell with a blue liquid leak, the patient’s urine turns blue or green. When such a position is observed, you should check whether the balloon is in its natural place and whether there is a change in size.
