What is the gastric bypass surgery

It is a surgical operation in which the surgeon reduces the size of the stomach and reduces the amount of food and drink absorption in order to lose weight.

What is the difference between gastric sleeve and gastric bypass

Although there is a great similarity between the two operations, there are some basic differences, as the type of surgery used in the two operations is laparoscopic surgery, and we mention the differences:

  • The shape of the stomach in the gastric sleeve is cylindrical (the gastric sleeve), but in the change of the gastric sleeve, the shape is a gastric pouch.
  • In sleeve gastrectomy, the volume of food intake is 28-140 grams, while in changing the path, it is 28 grams.
  • In sleeve gastrectomy, there is no modification to the alimentary canal, but in a change of course, the alimentary canal is modified in the shape of a letter Y.
  • The percentage of improvement in sleeve gastrectomy is 75%, while in gastric sleeve change, it is 88%.
  • The percentage of weight loss in the first two years in sleeve gastrectomy is 60-70%, while in gastrectomy it is 50-80%.
  • Peritonitis can occur in a change of course, but in sleeve gastrectomy, it does not occur.
  • The hospital stay for gastric sleeve gastrectomy is several days, but for gastric sleeve change, it is two to three days.

How is gastric bypass operation performed

  1.  Gastric bypass surgery is performed under general anesthesia and can be done through endoscopy or through traditional surgery.
  2. The surgeon makes several simple incisions that do not exceed 2 cm around the upper part of the stomach, where he inserts the endoscope and surgical tools through it.
  3. The stomach is divided into two parts, a simple upper part that is fixed with medical stitches and called the gastric pocket, which is small in size to receive food coming from the mouth directly, and can only accommodate 30 grams of food and liquids.
  4. The surgeon connects the upper part of the stomach to the small intestine at a distance of 100 to 150 cm from the front part of it, thus bypassing the part responsible for secreting satiety hormones and reducing the absorption of sugars and fats in this part, where the surgeon connects them using surgical threads and staples in proper ways that prevent Intestinal juice and food leak out, and a new digestive tract is formed.
  5. As for the larger lower part of the stomach, it is stapled and connected to the anterior separated part of the small intestine, where it is sutured again and connected to the greater part of the small intestine.

The surgeon tests the connection of the new intestinal canals and does not leak digestive fluids, and stitches the surgical incisions in a cosmetic way.
